Setting Meaningful Goals for Army NCOs

As NCOs, it's important that we constantly strive for personal and professional growth. One way to do this is by setting meaningful goals for ourselves and our teams. But what makes a goal meaningful?

A meaningful goal should be specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound. In other words, it should be clear and achievable, with a specific deadline. Let's break down each of these characteristics in more detail:

Specific: A specific goal is one that is clear and well-defined. Instead of setting a vague goal like "improve my unit's readiness," try setting a specific goal like "achieve a rating of "excellent" on the next unit readiness inspection by July 31st by implementing at least three new training programs for the team and increasing the number of soldiers certified in first aid by 50%." This goal is specific because it outlines exactly what needs to be done in order to achieve it.

Measurable: A measurable goal is one that can be quantified and tracked. In the example above, the goal is measurable because it includes specific metrics - the rating on the unit readiness inspection and the number of soldiers certified in first aid. By setting measurable goals, we can track our progress and determine whether we are on track to achieve them.

Attainable: An attainable goal is one that is realistic and achievable given the resources and time available. While it's important to challenge ourselves and set high goals, they should still be attainable with dedication and hard work. In the example above, the goal is attainable because it is realistic to implement new training programs and increase certification rates within the given time frame.

Relevant: A relevant goal is one that is aligned with our values, interests, and the needs of our team. In the example above, the goal is relevant because unit readiness is a key responsibility for NCOs. By setting relevant goals, we can ensure that our efforts are focused on what is most important.

Time-bound: A time-bound goal is one that has a specific deadline. In the example above, the goal is time-bound because it includes a specific date - July 31st. By setting time-bound goals, we can stay motivated and ensure that we are making progress towards achieving them.

It's important to remember that achieving our goals is not just about the end result - it's about the progress and personal growth that comes from striving towards them. So take some time to think about what meaningful goals you want to set for yourself and your team in the new year, and let's make it a great year for personal and professional growth.
